Alun Michael

Alun Michael, Police and Crime Commissioner for South Wales, was elected in November 2012 having been the Labour and Co-operative Member of Parliament for Cardiff South and Penarth for 25 years from 1987. He was Deputy Home Secretary and Minister for Policing before entering the Cabinet as Secretary of State for Wales. He resigned as an MP to stand in the Police and Crime Commissioner election. Co-operation across agencies to cut crime and antisocial behaviour is at the heart of his approach, with a focus on the needs of victims.  He takes an evidence-based approach to setting priorities – always asking “What Works?” – with a focus on reducing violence, tackling violence against women and girls, tackling substance misuse (including the successful Know the Score campaign) and on reducing offending in the 18 – 25 age group.
