Vaughan Gething

Vaughan Gething is the Assembly Member for Cardiff South and Penarth and the Deputy Minister for Health. He was elected in 2011 and in that time has been the chair of the Health and Social Care Committee and sat on the Environment and Sustainability Committee.

He also chaired the All Party Group on Rail in Wales and the All Party Group on Co-operatives. Prior to his election as the Labour and Co-operative AM for Cardiff South and Penarth, Vaughan was a Cardiff councillor for Butetown. Vaughan was educated at Aberystwyth and Cardiff universities and was a former president of NUS Wales.

He was a former partner with Thompsons Solicitors – the largest trade union law firm in Britain. In 2007/8 he led the 500,000 strong Welsh trade union movement as the youngest ever Wales TUC President.

Between 1999 and 2001, Vaughan worked as a researcher to former AMs Val Feld and Lorraine Barrett. Between 1999 and 2001, Vaughan was the chair of Right to Vote – a cross-party project to encourage greater participation from black minority ethnic communities in Welsh public life.
