UpRising shortlisted for the UK Social Mobility Awards

UpRising shortlisted for the UK Social Mobility Awards

July 19, 2017

We’re so pleased to announce that UpRising is one of the stellar organisations who have been shortlisted for a win at the inaugural UK Social Mobility Awards.

Other companies up for an award include Rolls Royce, Transport for London, Barclays, O2 and the Bank of England.

The UK Social Mobility Awards celebrates and recognises the forward-thinking organisations who are developing initiatives to promote social mobility, within their own workforce, or by influencing the debate on this issue. By raising awareness and celebrating the people and organisations that are committed to bringing about change, together we can advance the practical implementation of social mobility in this country.

UpRising is up for an award in the Innovation category, that recognises how we measure the impact that our programmes have on the young adults involved. During2014 - 2016, we worked with Demos to revitalise the way we measure our work  addresses the problem of unrepresentative leadership. Our impact report proved that our UpRisers have increased knowledge, confidence networks, skills  and job prospects as a direct result of taking part in UpRising Programmes.

The awards, which are sponsored by PwC and the RAF, and organised by social mobility charity Making The Leap, received an impressive array of entries. The judging panel includes prominent figures from business, charity, politics and the public sector and is chaired by HM Lord Lieutenant of London, Ken Olisa OBE. They will determine the winners, who will be announced at an awards gala on 12th October 2017.

Chair of the Judging Panel, Ken Olisa OBE, who is also the HM Lord Lieutenant of London, said,

"Pick up any newspaper or check out any social media thread and you will read arguments about increasing inequality in our country.  And worse, much of the blame is laid at the feet of business. Yet this depressing backdrop is far from the whole picture - happily there are many pioneering organisations doing something to reverse the apparent tide.  These awards will identify and recognise those leaders with the hope that this will become the start of a movement for change.”

UpRising Chief Executive Lucy Caldicott says that this nomination is a fantastic way to recognise the power of UpRising, she adds,

“We need to ensure that we continue to be relevant and are truly addressing our mission of breaking down the barriers to leadership for underrepresented young people.

“Over the past few years, we have worked incredibly hard to make certain that our monitoring and evaluation systems are robust and gathering the correct data. Our work with Demos has ensured that we can evidence our impact and we are incredibly pleased to have been recognised for this.”
