Alumni putting fundraising skills into action

June 20, 2018

Check out what Haleema Ali, a alumni of the Luton Leadership Programme, has been fundraising for.

On the 30th May, I held a community fundraising Iftar dinner, raising an incredible £1,269 for medical equipment for my little brother who has a rare illness. In the space of 16 days I managed to get the event fully sponsored; organised a mix of speakers and performers on the line-up; and the tickets sold out!  We had a diverse group of attendees from across the community, including Muslims and non-Muslims, which was really important to me.

The line-up included myself hosting, Gavin Shuker MP as keynote speaker, a local Councillor, a spoken-word artist, a nasheed/naat singer, and a drummer I had met through my UpRising social action campaign, SmARTer Luton. We also had an auction, with items that were kindly donated. All of this could not have been achievable in the short space of time without the help of family and friends, and in particular fellow UpRising alumni, Ferdusi Jahan and Arshad Hussain. They helped with the planning, set-up and coordinating the event, which I am extremely grateful for.

We still have a way to go to raise the £13,500 for the portable phototherapy equipment which will allow my 5 year old brother to have a better quality of life, but every little counts!
